March Melee - Introduction to Historical Fencing
Interested in historical fencing?
SHMS (Suomen Historiallisen Miekkailun Seura ry) offers an introductory month in March at a special price. During March we organize beginner courses in Longsword, Rapier, Sabre and Sword & Buckler. The fee for the entire month is 50€ and you can attend the courses you want - one, two or all of them.
- Longsword beginners course 2.3.2020-30.3.2020, Tuesdays 18:00-19:30
Longsword course teaches Italian longsword- and dagger fighting basics, as Fiore dei Liberi demonstrates in his book: Il Fiore De Battaglia (1410). Tuesday’s lessons cover basics and on Thursdays you can apply Tuesday’s lessons with more advanced students.

- Rapier beginners course 3.3.-31.3.2021, Wednesdays 18:00-19:30
On Rapier Beginner’s Course you will learn the basics of Italian Rapier according to Grand Simulacra, written by Ridofo Capo Ferro in 1610.

- Sabre beginners course 4.3.2020-25.3.2020, Thursdays 19:30-20:30
On the beginners’ course you will learn the basics of military sabre according to Charles Roworth’s The Art of Defence on Foot with Broad Sword and Sabre (1804).

- Sword and Buckler beginners’ course 6.3.2020-27.3.2020, Sundays 12:00-14:00
Sword and Buckler beginners’ course teaches the basics of fighting with sword and buckler. This includes basic stances, footwork, attacking and defending with side sword and buckler. The course includes drills from Royal Armory Manuscript I.33 (c.a. 1300 - 1320) and will prepare students to progress into sparring and freeplay.

Price: 50€ (students 35€). Free for paying members.
You will need indoor sports attire (black tracksuit pants, white t-shirt, and indoor sports shoes) and it is advisable to have a pair of gloves and a water bottle. We’ll provide all other necessary equipment.
The price covers all of the beginners’ courses. You can attend all of them with the same fee.
The first lesson is free. After the first lesson you can decide if you want to continue and pay the participation fee. Beginners’ course fee also covers the SHMS membership fee.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions, we’ll issue designated fencing masks for each student in the first class. We recommend wearing a mask to all training sessions and make sure you take care of your hand hygiene. We would also like to remind everyone not to attend practice if you are sick.
